The Origin of The Whitefish Bay Kung Fu Club

1995 marked the 1500th anniversary year of the founding of the Northern Shaolin Temple in Honan Provence in ancient China. On September 16, 1995 fifteen boys and girls gathered together on the grass in Sifuchuck's backyard and laid out the foundation for the first Kung Fu Club ever created, organized and governed by kids!

For weeks, kids went around the neighborhood posting flyers on telephone and light poles, on bulletin boards at markets, schools and Laundromats. On September 16th boys and girls arrived and signed up! At the meeting, Sifuchuck provided an outline for club by-laws and the kids went through it step by step, deciding how to run the club. They decided how much to pay in dues, what kind of committees they needed and elected an executive board. Someone asked if they should allow adults to join, so they made a rule that adults could join as Associate Members but they can't vote or run for office, and they have to pay twice as much in dues!
Most of the kids lived in Whitefish Bay so they named the club The Whitefish Bay Kung Fu Club.

The Club Today

Today, the club is known as WB Kung Fu & Lion Dance. No longer a club for kids (they grew up), membership rights extend to all no matter what age, although adults still pay twice as much as the kids. The main focus has not changed–to learn kung fu, and to learn about Chinese Martial Arts and its rich history and traditions. In 1999 the club purchased its first Lion and since then has worked feverishly to establish themselves as the premier Lion Dance Troupe in the state of Wisconsin!

WB Kung Fu & Lion Dance has performed spectacular Lion Dances throughout Wisconsin and in Northern Illinois. Our most memorable shows have been our annual performances for the Families with Children from China, (NEWFCC) and the UW Milwaukee Chinese Club, the Asian Moon Fest in Milwaukee, UW Madison Chinese Student Organization, Racine Dragon Boat Races, Chicago Autumn Moon Festival, and dozens of performances for groups like the Cub Scouts, local Churches, Schools, Parades, Chinese Restaurants, and even Chinese Weddings!
