Happy New Year ![]() Year of the Ox Chinese Year 4706 January 26, 2009 |
The Sifu (Kung Fu School Founder and Teacher)“In my own words.....”I first developed an interest in Chinese history, philosophy and culture while stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War. Serving as a combat medic and ambulance driver attached to a M.A.S.H. unit located between Seoul and the DMZ, I used my time to study Chinese culture. Often I would toss my books into a knapsack and climb mountains, following rushing streams and waterfalls past Buddhist temples to high places where I would sit and read for hours. I began studying Kung Fu in 1985 in New Brunswick, New Jersey while attending Rutgers Law School. In 1990, after moving to Wisconsin, I continued learning Kung Fu at Shao Lin Boxing Methods under Steve Kleppe, and was made an instructor of Hung Gar in 1992.
I was one of only a handful who learned the basics of Lion Dance from Wing Lam, himself, who no longer teaches Lion Dance. Over the years I have continued to maintain open communications with a network of Hung Gar practitioners and instructors as well as Lion Dancers from around the globe. Rounding out my fitness education and experience, I also became a personal trainer through AFPA (American Fitness Professionals & Associates). This training has greatly improved my ability to teach Kung Fu safely and efficiently and has enabled me to recognize and address individual needs as training progresses. Combining years of martial-arts practice and cultural research with modern sports science from the AFPA certification, my approach is one of classic Eastern physical and philosophical culture combined with modern Western science. Credentials Hung Gar Sifu, Authorized by Kwong Wing Lam, Sifu Personal Trainer, Certified by AFPA CPR Proficient, Certified by Red Cross
